Request a repeat prescription

If you have access to the internet and are comfortable using it then the easiest and safest way for you to request your repeat medication is via your NHS account.

You can access this on a PC or via the NHS App on a tablet or mobile device.

Your usual medications are listed and you simply have to click the ones you need to order.

It also helps reduce the amount of time it takes for us to re-key information into the system when we receive your request.

Other ways of requesting your medication

If you prefer to request using a paper form you can bring either of the following to the surgery:

  • The prescription tick-slip supplied with your last medication. This will have been given to you by the pharmacy and will have your medications and dosages on it.
  • If you don't have the prescription tick-slip you can complete our prescription request form and send it by email to gp.n84613@nhs.net.

If we are closed when you drop it off then you can post it through our secure letter box.  If necessary, you can request a new prescription tick-slip from our receptionists and we have a supply of prescription request forms available to complete in our reception.

Important: Advisory notice

We do NOT accept repeat prescription requests by telephone, over our reception counter or via community pharmacies, for safety reasons. The only exception to this is where a patient is housebound, has dementia or has a learning disability, AND they do not have a carer who can request their prescriptions for them.

Collecting your medication

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • On the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • At your GP practice
  • At any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions.

You can usually collect your medication from your nominated pharmacy three complete working days after you have requested the prescription from us. Ask your pharmacy if they operate an SMS notification system to let you know when your medicines are ready to collect.

Questions about your medication

If you have questions about your medication, your local pharmacy can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines that you can buy without a prescription.

If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription it is best to call us after 10am when the phone lines are likely to be less busy.

Medication reviews

All patients who are prescribed repeat medications will be given a medication review date of 'the 28th day of their birth month'.  For patients on more than four repeat medications, please arrange an appointment at the surgery for a medication review around the month of your birthday.  For other patients, one of our GPs or practice pharmacists may be able to review your medications without an appointment, as long as any critical monitoring of your medications is up to date.  If a medication review date has been exceeded, we may not be able to issue your repeat prescription.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, they can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • Coughs
  • Colds
  • Sore throats
  • Tummy trouble
  • Aches and pains.

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
